Abstract:

The effort to provide the lay public access to high quality biomedical information requires investigation into advanced techniques and technologies, e.g., multi-tier system architectures, database design, design of suitable image viewers, image compression and others. The AnatQuest project at the U.S. National Library of Medicine is designed to enable public access to high resolution color cryosections from NLM's Visible Human Project. This book chapter presents the design considerations that were employed in the development of the online and kiosk versions of AnatQuest. Furthermore, it outlines the research toward linking the text content of documents with anatomic images from the Visible Human Database.
