Abstract:

CONTEXT: The computational ability of portable computers is increasing in power. These devices will be useful to physicians at the point of care and will be prevalent in their practices in the near future. Programming for the Palm platform is difficult and time consuming for most practitioners, but hypertext markup language (HTML) programming is simple enough for many health professionals and will allow them to create their own applications that are responsive to their needs. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate how simple Web-based applications can be developed for the needs of the physician. SETTING: Any facility with computers with an Internet connection. RESULTS: Using currently available technology, we were able to demonstrate that Web (HTML) applications viewed on handheld devices can be used to fulfill many of the informational needs of physicians at the point of care. CONCLUSIONS: Web-based applications will play a major role in the increased use of handheld devices in the clinical setting. Although this technology is already usable in its current form, there are still areas to improve on if the Web-based system is to be widely used among practicing heath professionals.
