In Memoriam.

Morris F. Collen, MD (11/12/1913 - 9/27/2014)

Dr. Morris Collen was an internationally respected leader in medical informatics and a pioneer in electronic medical record systems.

NLM is honored to present a 2005 interview with Dr. Collen, conducted by Dean Sittig.

This interview is part of an oral history project featuring Conversations with Medical Informatics Pioneers.

Dr. Sittig recalls:

Morris was a wonderful man. Always so giving of his time to others. I can remember several instances when I introduced him to a group of my students and friends and he was always so kind to take the time to stop and really talk to them about what they were doing. I will miss that, but his spirit lives on in our memories and his work.

“If a genie came along and said, ‘I can give you back the best ten years, one decade,’ what would you choose?” I’d choose my 50s in just a second. Because the kids were grown, I was established in my career, I still had good health, didn’t have to worry about “am I over 7,000 feet?” I think that was a great decade for me. I loved it."
