Distance Learning and Education
Distance Learning and Education research is investigating how advanced communications technologies can be used to improve biomedical education. These technologies are of two types:
- Asynchronous technologies include video-on-demand and multimedia delivered over the Internet to effectively deliver learning resources.
- Synchronous technologies include videoconferencing and tools for sharing applications and information in real time, and simulcasting videoconferences to wider audiences to approximate in-person learning environments.
The research also addresses how to combine and integrate these two types of technologies in order to extend learning time and to maximize the benefits of each.
In this research, current, state-of-the-art, and off-the-shelf technologies are configured and evaluated in OHPCC’s Collaboratory (Collab), then incorporated into NLM distance learning programs and educational research.
