Expertise and Research Interests:

Swapna Abhyankar, MD, is a Special Volunteer with the Computer Science Branch of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, NLM. Dr. Abhyankar received her BS degree from Stanford University and MD from the University of Michigan. She did her pediatrics internship and residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC and is board certified in Pediatrics. She completed a post-doctoral Clinical Informatics fellowship at NLM in 2011.

Dr. Abhyankar is currently working on several projects. Her three primary areas of focus are: 1) developing standard terminology and messaging guidance for newborn screening and long-term follow-up for patients diagnosed with conditions found during newborn screening; 2) developing the content for NLM’s standards-based personal health record (PHR); and 3) standardizing the contents of MIMIC-II, a large ICU database of de-identified patient data, to make it more useful for researchers and using the data to answer clinical research questions.

Professional Activities:

Dr. Abhyankar is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). She is also a member of the Laboratory Standards and Procedures subcommittee of the HHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC) as well as the HRSA Critical Congenital Heart Disease pilot program’s Technical Advisory Committee. She is on the steering committee for the Association of Public Health Laboratories’ Newborn Screening Technical assistance and Evaluation Program (NewSTEPs) and the Morocco newborn screening pilot program.

Honors and Awards:

She received an NLM group award in 2011 for her work on the PHR and in 2012 for her work on the MIMIC-II database.
