Abstract:

This work includes all the work that I’ve done in the realm of medical terminologies since my last BoSC report (2010). I’ll divide the presentation into two areas: Terminology resources that I’ve developed to promote and facilitate the use of standard terminologies in the electronic health record, and the research they spawned, including CORE Problem List Subset of SNOMED CT – since its first release in 2009, the CORE Subset has been updated and expanded. It has been used widely in EHRs, research, quality assurance and other activities SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM map – the first map was published in 2012 with 7,000 SNOMED CT concept mapped. This year, we are on target to complete the mapping of all 120,000 concepts that are in scope. The map has taken over 5 years to complete because every map is done twice independently for quality assurance. I’ll also mention other mapping projects e.g., ICD-9-CM to SNOMED CT, ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM, SNOMED CT to ICD-10-PCS. RxTerms – first release in 2008, there is a steady user base among hospitals and software vendors and apps developers. Apart from the regular updates, the content has been enhanced regularly to harmonize with RxNorm Research that requires in-depth knowledge of medical terminologies Surescripts study – shows the value of an electronic prescriptions database to facilitate medication reconciliation Extraction of information from drug labels Extraction of drug indications using MetaMap Extraction of drug-drug interactions using NLP – this leads to a multi-year collaboration with FDA (through an IAA) to help them with their Structured Product Labeling Indexing activity Comparison of three commercial drug knowledge bases for the detection of drug-drug interactions
